Sticky Solids

Particle cohesion in bulk solids due to moisture or other attractive forces can be simulated in EDEM using a simple linear cohesion model.

More advanced models can be implemented including the JKR model, Van der Waals forces and liquid bridges. Similar models can be implemented to model wall adhesion to simulate particle build-up on equipment surfaces.

In the video example the cohesive force between particles is increasing over time resulting in formation of increasingly large clumps. The cohesive force is as a result of the addition of a liquid in the form of a spray. The droplets in the spray have been approximated using particles which disappear on contact with the solid particles.

EDEM In Action

Cohesion Drum Coating

Contact of initially dry particles with a liquid spray creates an increasing amount of cohesion which causes the solids to become sticky and begin to clump.
