“ Over the past several years Hatch has been integrating EDEM Simulation technology and services into design projects and has achieved a high level of confidence in materials handling equipment designs. This results in substantial benefits around design robustness, equipment reliability in plant start-up and commissioning, and increasing plant quality, yield and performance… ”

“ EDEM is used in designing bulk transfers for surface and underground mining applications covering many minerals, including coal and hard rock. As a predictive tool, EDEM has contributed greatly to the design capabilities of DRA where major mining projects require careful analysis of bulk material transfers ”

“EDEM is bringing the benefits of simulation-based design
    throughout the mining production chain.”

    EDEM: DEM Simulation for Mining

The performance and reliability of bulk materials handling and processing equipment, such as conveyor transfer points and chutes, is a critical factor determining the productivity of mines, mineral processing plant and bulk ports and terminals.

EDEM® is the leading DEM (Discrete Element Method) simulation technology for the mining industry. It is used by mine operators, engineering companies and equipment suppliers throughout the production chain – from mine to mill to bulk terminal.

The information provided by EDEM simulation and analysis is helping the mining industry to realize financial benefits arising from improved equipment performance, and reduced production risks.

    Bulk Materials Handling

DEM Solutions, in collaboration with leading Mining companies and EPCMs, have developed the EDEM BulkSim™ Solution–to meet the specific needs of engineers designing bulk materials handling equipment such as conveyor transfer points and chutes and other transfer equipment such as bucket-wheel and stacker reclaimers.

Based on a robust calibration approach, and employing EDEM BulkSim® software, the BulkSim Solution is transforming traditional approaches to the design of these production-critical components of ore and coal handling lines. Simulation-based design is a far more robust and reliable method that substantially reduces the risk of unscheduled downtime.

    Mineral Processing

The application of DEM simulation directly and in combination with other numerical techniques such as Population Balance Modeling is transitioning from research to industrial application. Leading experts from the international mineral processing research community in collaboration with leading Mining companies and suppliers of communition equipment are applying EDEM software to generate new and valuable information for the design and optimization of comminution equipment–by predicting the effects of ore characteristics; crusher and mill geometry, and the dynamics and wear of liners on mill yield and power demand.

DEM Solutions partners with the Laboratório de Tecnologia Mineral (LTM) in Brazil who provide material testing services for mineral comminution and engineering consulting services for deployment of DEM simulation in design and optimizarion of grinding mills, including SAG mills and ball mills.

EDEM also provides information on the effects that wear of mill components will have on charge dynamics within a crusher or mill and at discharge, which is valuable information to both suppliers and operators of this machinery.
