EDEM can be coupled with CFD software to enable both one-way and fully coupled particle-fluid simulation. For example, EDEM-FLUENT co-simulation has been implemented which provides a full two-way coupling which provides a plug-and-play DEM capability within FLUENT.
EDEM uses a surface mesh to represent boundary surfaces which enables a one-to-one coupling with the boundary surface elements of the FLUENT fluid volume mesh. EDEM-FLUENT co-simulation has been used to investigate systems such as particle agglomeration and clumping in fluidized beds, dense phase conveying, filtration, solid-liquid mixing, pipe erosion, spray coating and transport of cuttings in oil well drilling.
